Sev Puri

Being a foodie, one thing I miss a lot since coming to the US is Mumbai Street Food...I've to only mention the word and my mouth starts watering. I had my favorite vendors for all the dishes - pav bhaji, chaats, samosas and bhajjias, sandwiches, sweets and they all recognised me and I was such a regular that they would even give me extras, totally free!! In fact for a month before leaving for the US, I went all around the city eating at all my favorite places and saying goodbyes to my favorite 'bhaiyyas', I'm sure they miss me:)....
I have tried most of the places that serve Chaat out here, but I've never felt satisfied. So I've been planning since long to make something at home. Last week I had pani puri at a friends place, and it was just heavenly. Now I just had to have my second favorite dish too, so I made Sev Puri a couple of days back and surprised Manoj when he got back from work.....both of us skipped dinner so you can imagine how many puris we had.

Sev Puri

Ingredients:
Flat Puris
Potatoes, boiled and mashed
Green Chutney (recipe below)
Date and Tamarind Chutney, I used store bought ( Khana Khazana brand, its yumm)
Red Chilli Paste (recipe below)
Chaat Masala, a little to sprinkle
Thin Sev
Red onion, finely chopped
Raw Mango, cut into small pieces
Cilantro, finely chopped

Green Chutney
1 bunch cilantro
handful of mint leaves
2-3 garlic cloves
1 green chilli, or to taste
1 tbs lemon juice
2 tsps sugar
salt to taste

Grind all the above ingredients to a fine paste using very little water.

Red Chilli Paste
Soak the chillies in water for a few hours and grind to a smooth paste with little water.
Or use store bought.

Method:
Arrange the puris on a plate. Top each puri with some mashed potato, green chutney, tamarind chutney, red chilli paste, onion, mango and sprinkle a little chaat masala.
Cover with a generous amount of sev.
Garnish with some more onions, mango and cilantro.
Serve immediately or the puris may become soggy.
Enjoy!

  1. You miss only chaat? I miss masala vade, coconut water, sugar cane juice, old neighbor aunties who make your life hell asking silly questions, the noise, the smell and the pollution and home :( This I will make, though I haven't seen flat puris at the desi store. They have sometg called papdi. Is that what you used? And I thought I had commented on the mango pudding can't find that now. I am having this great idea of sandwiching it between 2 sponge cakes and calling it mango mousse cake :)

Papdi is the same thing n the cake sounds great, although u must call it mango pudding cake as the texture is quite different.
